Elaine Kim

New to Frances Kahn this season is eco-friendly designer Elaine Kim with her self-titled label.  The Korean-born, San Francisco-Los Angeles raised, Kim, focuses this season on her signature fabrics such as silk, nylon, leather and woven cotton.  Her spring 2013 pallet is a play with neutral shades with sculptural and asymmetric cuts that can be classified as architecturally artistic.

Elaine Kim 2Kim re-debuted at New York Fashion Week 2008 after an eight year hiatus from the fashion industry.  Her return commanded a different and more responsible approach to fashion, one that was environmentally sustainable.  Kim found this through soft fabrics made from discarded cotton husks and wood pulp—a renewable source material.  She is now committed to incorporating at least one sustainable fabric with each collection and continues to work on growing her green initiative with each collection.

Elaine Kim was the name of the nineties with her Melrose stores selling designer clothing, and then label called Product featuring lycra jeans and inventive fabrics.  The label was adorned by the hottest celebrities such as Kate Moss, Cameron Diaz, Claudia Schiffer, Sharon Stone and Madonna who was obsessed with Kim’s faux Mongolian fur coat.  Product was one of the first women’s clothing companies that offered an online boutique.  And in 2000 Product was sold.

This season Elaine Kim is introduced to our repertoire because its luxe quality and design.  Its neutral tones ground a lot of our more colorful collections.  But most importantly it is a label that really speaks to our customers with ease.—FK
